I was housed at STRIVE Chicago Employment Training Services to lead all aspects of hardware and software training at the Computer Advancement Technology Center; I facilitated at the STRIVE West site.
After providing adult literacy and computer instructions to residents of West Humboldt Park and surrounding communities for 2.5 years I decided to go to school full time and finish my undergraduate degree at DePaul. Immediately after graduation, I enrolled into DePaul’s Master of Science program with my focus being Business Information Technology; my graduate career was completed in June 2007.
Currently, I’m working at the LEED Council, Inc as the Technology Coordinator and Skills Trainer and have been since October of 2007.
What I consider to be my principal future aspiration is to become an effective business analyst and application developer. Additionally, I plan to pursue a PhD in community informatics studying the application of information and communication technologies that enable and empower community processes.

There are countless childhood experiences I cannot capture to reiterate into stories. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent many years erasing events I felt were irrelevant to the development of my own identity. The shaping of identity is important, providing that the proper nourishment, guidance, and educational support at a grass root level exists.
I ended my high school career at the beginning of sophomore year and it wasn’t until years later that I realized I needed an education to succeed. I decided to enroll into a General Education Development Program, and after 3 failed attempts I passed the exam and received my GED certificate.
After completing my GED, I enrolled into SER Business Technical Institute, located in Humboldt Park, for their Computer and Information Science program. I learned MS Office, typing skills, general office procedures and report writing. After completing the nine month program, I received my first real job as an Administrative Assistant and Technical Liaison with the West Humboldt Park Family and Community Development Council.
During my time at the Development Council, I decided to enroll into DeVry University with a focus in Computer Information System. I was enrolled conditionally until I was able to complete my developmental writing and math courses, at which I was successful. After three trimesters at DeVry and after six months at the Development Council I left both to pursue an education and career at DePaul University. I began working at DePaul University’s Egan Urban Center under a grant funded by the Department of Education for a Community Technology Center project. |
